Students will explore the anatomy of a residential electrical system, from the utility service entrance to branch circuits, outlets, switches, and lighting. Special attention is given to electrical systems commonly found in historic homes and modern replacement wiring.
Through classroom instruction and hands-on demonstrations, students will learn how electricity flows through a home, identify common wiring methods and electrical components, and recognize signs of aging, deterioration, or unsafe modifications. Participants will gain practical experience with basic electrical tasks such as replacing switches, outlets, testing circuits, and understanding breaker panels. The course also explores how to make thoughtful electrical upgrades that improve safety and functionality while preserving the historic character of older buildings.
The course combines foundational electrical theory with practical, hands-on experience. Students will learn to identify common electrical components, safely use basic testing equipment, troubleshoot everyday electrical problems, and perform simple repairs and replacements. Discussions also cover electrical code considerations, common hazards, grounding and GFCI protection, and best practices for integrating modern electrical needs into historic buildings while respecting their architectural integrity.
No prior experience required — all tools and materials are provided. Participants will leave with new skills and a deeper appreciation for electrical systems.
All materials are included in the tuition. No experience is necessary.

Fundamentals of residential electricity (voltage, current, resistance, and circuits)
Anatomy of a historic home's electrical system
Common wiring methods found in older homes (knob-and-tube, BX, NM cable)
