    Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion Statement

At Lancaster Workshop & Tool Library, we believe that all people are created equal, and that a thriving, just, and creative world is built on the principles of diversity, equity, and inclusion. Our space is built to represent, personify, and embody the beautiful diversity of the Lancaster community we cherish and strive to serve. Our mission is rooted in the idea that skilled trades, tool access, and mentorship should be for everyone—both as a profession and as a community resource.

We are committed to advancing opportunities for people of all backgrounds to learn, practice, and excel in historic skilled trades. The fields of woodworking, masonry, plaster, restoration, and other preservation disciplines have historically lacked representation for women, BIPOC, LGBTQIA+, and other underrepresented groups. Lancaster Workshop & Tool Library seeks to change that by removing barriers, fostering representation, and building a safe, supportive space for learning and collaboration.

    Our Commitment:

    • Welcome and Safety: We will house a space where everyone is welcome and safe and reciprocally responsible for the well-being and safety of one another both inside and outside the workshop.

    • Zero Tolerance: We have a zero-tolerance policy for discriminatory and/or dangerous behavior.

    • Mutual Respect: We commit to every individual having the inherent right to be treated with dignity and respect in our workshops, programs, and community engagements, without exception.

    • Equitable Access: We provide equitable access to tools, training, and mentorship regardless of race, ethnicity, gender identity, sexual orientation, socioeconomic status, age, or ability.

    • Inclusive Hiring & Leadership: We strive to recruit, support, and retain a diverse team of instructors, staff, and volunteers, ensuring leadership reflects the community we serve.

    • Community Relations: We partner with local organizations, trade schools, and apprenticeship programs to expand access and representation within the skilled trades.

    • Empowerment Through Skills: By teaching valuable, hands-on preservation skills, we create pathways to livable-wage employment and pride in protecting our shared built environment.

Lancaster Workshop & Tool Library’s programs are intersectional, intergenerational, and community-centered—designed not only to preserve the architecture that tells our shared history, but also to build a future where everyone has a voice, a role, and an opportunity to thrive.
