Overview:
Discover the fundamentals of framing and finish carpentry while making a meaningful impact in the community. In this hands-on workshop, participants will learn the essential skills needed to accurately measure and install a frame wall and finish with decorative wood trim using common woodworking tools and techniques.
In Frame & Trim Fundamentals, participants will construct a gallery wall that will be donated to and displayed at a local nonprofit organization, Peace Kids to the Rescue. Along the way, students will gain confidence using miter saws, nailers, clamps, measuring tools, and fastening techniques while learning how to achieve clean joints, square assemblies, and professional-looking finishes.
The course also covers material selection, layout planning, safe tool operation, surface preparation, and finishing options.

Workshop safety and personal protective equipment (PPE)
Safe operation of miter saws, brad nailers, drills, and other common woodworking tools
Reading a tape measure and making accurate measurements and cuts
Layout and planning for frame construction
Proper use of wood glue, clamps, fasteners, and brad nails
Sanding, surface preparation, and finishing techniques
Basic finish carpentry principles applicable to trim installation
Problem-solving, teamwork, and project planning through a collaborative community installation
By the end of the course, students will have completed a functional gallery wall to support a local non-profit and leave with the foundational skills and confidence to pursue further projects.

Cody Makarevitz
I’ve spent years blending exhibit design, fabrication, and building tiny houses, so my classroom naturally is more like a busy workshop than a traditional lecture hall. I’m a big believer that the best way to understand how something works is to build it, test it, and probably make a bit of a mess along the way. To me, mistakes are just a normal part of the design process. I love bringing a mix of practical and technical skills, helping students realize they have the power to shape the world around them.
